TIMES SQUARE · CELEBRITIES, PHOTOS & FAMILY FUN
By Zvi Zidon and the CenterNYC editorial team · Information checked October 13, 2026
The celebrity will not ask you to hurry. Your family might. Madame Tussauds is the kind of place where a quick photograph can turn into three poses, a costume debate and somebody insisting on one more shot. Come for a playful hour with familiar faces, rather than expecting a quiet museum of objects behind glass.
At a glance: Madame Tussauds New York is an indoor wax attraction at 234 West 42nd Street. Online tickets currently start at $34; the operator suggests 60–90 minutes for a self-guided visit. Allow longer for photos and optional experiences.

A camera-ready break from the serious sightseeing
The pleasure is recognition: spotting someone whose music you love, finding a familiar film character, or discovering that the person you are traveling with has a surprisingly strong opinion about celebrities. This is an easy outing to share across generations when everyone recognizes at least a few faces. If celebrity culture leaves you cold, the ticket will not suddenly turn it into your favorite subject.
The current experience directory includes music, Broadway, Marvel heroes, the Tonight Show and horror-themed rooms. Choose a few favorites rather than treating every figure as a compulsory photo stop. Families with younger children should ask staff how to avoid the frightening sections.
On our October check, the ticket page also advertised the limited Harry Styles exhibition, ending November 8, 2026. That is a reason for fans to look closely at their dates, not a permanent feature to promise for every future trip.
What visitors make of the experience
The recent Tripadvisor comments we read make the appeal easy to picture: visitors enjoyed the photo opportunities, the 4D experience and, for some, the horror rooms. An October reviewer liked the visit but wanted clearer context around the figures at the start. A July visitor questioned the value of the extra photo package. That is a useful distinction when choosing a ticket: enjoying the attraction does not mean you need every upgrade.
Google comments we read likewise praised the lifelike figures and the fun of recognizing familiar faces. Those examples are a sample of visitor opinions, not a guarantee that every age or interest will enjoy the same rooms.
Which ticket is worth buying?
| Ticket | Advertised online starting price | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | $34 | Celebrity galleries and Jumanji Safari Tours 4D. |
| Gold | $39 | Adds Cobra Quest 7D, fast-track entry and digital photos. |
| Platinum | $54 | Gold benefits plus a wax-hand souvenir and guidebook. |
These are the official advertised offers checked October 13, 2026. The corresponding walk-up prices were $44, $49 and $64. Select your date and review the checkout total before comparing packages.
For four paid admissions at those starting prices, the ticket subtotal would be $136 for Silver, $156 for Gold or $216 for Platinum. That is a planning example, not a final family quote: eligibility, date, checkout charges and extras still matter. If everyone mainly wants their own phone photos, begin with Silver. If the extra ride and digital photos appeal to the whole group, compare Gold’s actual price difference for your date.
The most interesting extra may be how the figures are made
The Behind the Scenes tour shifts attention from famous faces to the people who create them. It covers sculpture, painting, hair work and costume. For someone wondering how a face becomes convincing enough to fool the eye, this may be more rewarding than another selfie.
The guided tour lasts 30 minutes and is included with admission, but sessions are limited to 25 people and operate first come, first served. Ask the host team on arrival about availability and the meeting point. Photography is not allowed on this tour; the operator asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes early to reach it. Operational changes can cancel a session.
Photo ideas that look less like a roll call
Choose a scene, not only a face. Frame your travel companion as part of the setting, then take one wider photograph that tells the joke and one closer portrait. Swap the photographer regularly so the same person does not disappear from the entire afternoon.
Give other visitors space, follow each room’s signs and keep hands and props within the venue’s rules. A recognisable expression and a little patience usually do more for the photograph than taking twenty identical shots.
Behind the wax: a 31-second look at the craft
Before a figure is ready for its close-up, the real person has to sit for one. This official Madame Tussauds USA clip shows Dua Lipa being measured for her New York figure, inspired by her Studio 2054 concert. It is a short look at the making process, rather than a tour of today’s galleries.

Hours, children and a comfortable visit
Use the dated opening calendar, rather than assuming every evening closes at the same time. October 13 was listed as 10 a.m.–7 p.m., with last entry at 7 p.m. For an unhurried visit, choose a slot well before the last admission.
The operator’s visitor FAQ suggests 60–90 minutes and allows visitors to take their own pace. We would reserve about two hours if your group enjoys photography, and additional time if you join the backstage tour.
Strollers must be under 36 inches wide. Bring your own wheelchair if needed; wheelchairs are not available to borrow. The accessibility guide describes lifts and staff assistance, while individual ride requirements need separate attention. Some rooms have loud sounds, intense lighting and strobes. Being indoors makes this useful in rain, but it does not make it a quiet sensory environment.
Getting here and giving the day some breathing room
The entrance is at 234 West 42nd Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, close to Times Square and the Port Authority area. Open the attraction in Google Maps for the route from your hotel and the best subway exit for your needs.
Combine it with a short Times Square walk, or head east to Bryant Park and the library for a calmer change of scene. If you are seeing Aladdin at the nearby New Amsterdam, leave room for a meal and rest between the two. Two nearby addresses can still make a long afternoon for a small child.
Prefer a visit built around theater history rather than celebrity photographs? Compare the Museum of Broadway. For a broader family day, our New York with children guide helps balance indoor stops and outdoor time.
Kosher meals and Shabbat planning
Plan food before or after the attraction: its FAQ asks guests to finish food and drinks before entering. Use our kosher restaurant guides to choose a certified branch, and leave enough time for the walk and the meal. We have not verified a certified kosher dining option inside Madame Tussauds.
For a Shabbat-observant outing, Sunday through Thursday is simplest. An early Friday visit needs a comfortable margin for the journey back and Shabbat preparation; do not treat a late attraction closing time as your own deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Is Madame Tussauds good for a rainy day?
It is an indoor attraction, so it can fit a rainy Midtown outing. Loud effects and horror-themed sections may still be unsuitable for some visitors.
How long should we allow?
The operator suggests 60–90 minutes. Allow around two hours for a photo-heavy visit, with more time for the optional 30-minute backstage tour.
Is the backstage tour guaranteed with a ticket?
No. It is included when operating, but capacity is limited and availability depends on conditions on the day. Ask the host team when you arrive.
