EXIT Escape Room NYC: Private Games, Prices & Family Tips

MIDTOWN · PRIVATE ESCAPE GAMES · RAINY-DAY PLANS

By Zvi Zidon, a New Yorker since 2002 · Practical details checked October 13, 2026

Some New York outings ask you to admire the subway. This one asks you to stop it. At EXIT Escape Room NYC, a runaway train is one excuse to spend an hour solving clues together—and to discover that the quietest person in your group may be the one everyone should have listened to.

At a glance: EXIT runs private, 60-minute escape games at 247 West 36th Street, Suite 101, in Midtown Manhattan. A weekday game for two is listed at $90; a weekday group of four pays $152. Choose the room by its story and recommended age, and allow about 90 minutes for the outing.

Eight friends, with one small exception

In my original 2018 article, I described arriving as a group of eight friends. Almost everyone enjoyed it. The exception was the friend who did not like puzzles—which, in hindsight, was quite a useful clue.

What I liked was doing something together instead of simply sitting next to one another at a café or movie. There is a shared task, a little pressure and usually a moment when someone surprises you. I would happily recommend that kind of outing to a group that enjoys figuring things out. I would not use it to convert a determined puzzle-hater.

That is a memory of the earlier visit. The address, games and prices below come from the operator’s current pages.

Four stories. Choose your kind of trouble.

High Speed NYC: the commute has become a mission

The train is moving, its conductor is missing, and your group needs to work out how to activate the emergency systems. This is the most distinctly New York premise of the four: a familiar piece of the city turned into a problem you can actually solve. The operator recommends ages 10 and up. If the family likes machines and teamwork, start by looking at High Speed NYC.

The Magic Crystal: a fairy tale with a deadline

A witch’s spell threatens the kingdom, and finding the way to reverse it becomes your job. Choose this direction for a group that likes fantasy more than crime stories. The appeal is stepping into an invented world together, with a clear reason to search it. The room page recommends age nine and up.

The Perfect Heist: someone else’s money, your problem

A mobster has hidden cash in the basement of his pizzeria. You arrive while he is away, hoping to find it before he returns. It is a heist-movie setup in miniature: a better thematic fit for teens and adults who enjoy a crime caper than for a child hoping for a cheerful fantasy. The operator recommends ages 12 and up. The booking calendar recommends a maximum of six players for Mob Heist, compared with eight for the other games.

Sugar Rush: a cupcake competition goes sideways

Your rivals have hidden the tools and ingredients. Now the baking challenge is a puzzle challenge, with no baking knowledge required. The room description recommends age nine and up and mentions cupcakes at the finish. The booking calendar says eight and up; for an eight-year-old, confirm suitability with the staff. For kosher requirements or allergies, discuss the food component before booking; the bakery theme is not evidence of kosher certification.

Use the story as well as the name when reserving. The live booking system checked October 13 uses The Witch’s Curse and Mob Heist for the fantasy and heist themes. If the names shown for your date differ from the information pages, confirm the room with the operator before paying.

What your group actually pays

The smaller-group prices are totals, not per-person prices. That distinction makes a noticeable difference when comparing a date night with a family outing.

Group size Monday–Friday, excluding holidays Weekend and holidays
2 players $90 total $120 total
3 players $120 total $135 total
4 players $152 total ($38 each) $160 total
5–8 players $38 each $38 each

These are the prices listed on the official booking page, checked October 13, 2026. Additional checkout charges were not verified. For a Shabbat-observant couple, comparing Thursday with Sunday means comparing the $90 weekday group price with the $120 weekend price—not simply choosing “any weekend.”

The published cancellation policy allows free cancellation or rescheduling up to 12 hours before the booking. Inside that window, the operator lists an $80 fee. Read the terms attached to the particular reservation, especially for a special event or larger group.

Private means your group, not a roomful of strangers

Every game is private. You will play with the people you bring, which makes this an appealing option for a couple who want an active date or friends who want a shared memory. It is less useful for a solo traveler hoping the operator will assemble a group of new acquaintances.

The fictional story may involve being locked in, but the operator’s FAQ says participants can open the door and leave during the session. A game master follows your progress, and you can ask for a clue. Getting a hint is often a better use of the evening than staring resentfully at the same object for ten minutes.

Let people say their observations out loud. Someone who is not quick at reading may be excellent at noticing patterns; someone who is usually quiet may make the useful connection. The aim is to play together, not to appoint one person chief solver while everyone else watches.

Build the day around the reservation

Use Google Maps for 247 West 36th Street, Suite 101. The old West 38th Street address is not the destination in the current official information. A familiar business name is not enough if an old saved pin takes you to the wrong block.

Our suggested planning block is 90 minutes: time to arrive and get organized, the hour of play, and a little space afterward. Follow the actual arrival instructions in your booking confirmation. Available start times come from the reservation calendar; we are not treating the building’s hours as a guarantee that a room is available.

The game is indoors, making it a useful option when rain spoils an outdoor plan. Accessibility, steps, lighting effects and other sensory needs have not been confirmed in the information reviewed here. Ask about the selected room before paying if any of those will determine whether someone can participate.

For a family, the room-specific age guidance is more useful than one age label for the whole business. Language matters too: a child who enjoys puzzles at home may still need help reading clues in English. Let an adult support the reading without taking over the game.

A preview without giving away the answers

Watch the official High Speed NYC preview · 42 seconds

Watch the operator’s 42-second High Speed NYC preview. It is an older promotional video from the EXIT Escape Room NYC channel, useful for a taste of the train theme. Use the current booking page for the address, prices and room availability.

For your own photographs, ask the staff where a group picture is welcome before or after the game. Keep puzzles and solutions out of public photos. The next group deserves its moment of discovery too.

Keep the rest of Midtown flexible

Pair the game with a short Times Square walk when the weather cooperates, or make it the active part of a day that includes MoMA. These are separate stops with travel time between them, not attractions in the same building.

If you plan to see Aladdin that evening, leave a proper interval for the journey and a meal instead of stacking the curtain time directly after the room. Our kosher restaurant guides help with the food part; choose by the actual restaurant address and opening hours.

For a Shabbat-observant itinerary, plan this paid activity Sunday–Thursday. Friday afternoon and Shabbat are not suggested outing times in this guide.
