EASTERN LONG ISLAND · A FULL SHOPPING DAY
By CenterNYC Editorial · Checked October 13, 2026
At Tanger Riverhead, “one more store” can quietly become the afternoon. A pair of sneakers leads to a winter coat, then somebody spots a bag they were not looking for. For people who enjoy the hunt, that is the attraction. For someone spending a short first trip in Manhattan, it is also the question: how much of New York do you want to exchange for fitting rooms?
At a glance: Tanger Riverhead is an open-air outlet destination in eastern Long Island, at 200 Tanger Mall Drive. Regular hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Allow three to five hours for shopping and roughly 90–150 minutes on the road each way from Manhattan, potentially longer in traffic.

When the longer journey makes sense
Riverhead is easier to justify when eastern Long Island is already part of your trip. A shopping session can fit around a stay in the area without becoming a long commute from Manhattan. Tanger describes a collection of more than 130 brands and local shops, but the useful number is how many of your own favorites are here.
If you are starting in the city solely to buy a few shirts, compare Tanger Deer Park first. It is a different center, closer to Manhattan. For a rainy day, Jersey Gardens keeps the shopping indoors. Riverhead’s stores are enclosed, but the walks between them are outdoors.
The store list: from sneakers to a new suitcase
These brands appeared in Tanger’s directory when checked on October 13. The names help plan a route; they cannot promise a particular size, product line or discount.
| What you are shopping for | Stores to shortlist |
|---|---|
| Sportswear and shoes | Nike Factory Store, Adidas, Under Armour, New Balance Factory Store |
| Everyday clothes | Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s Outlet, J.Crew | Crewcuts Factory |
| Bags and luggage | Coach, Kate Spade New York, Tumi, Samsonite |
| Outerwear and outdoor gear | Columbia Factory Store, The North Face, Timberland Factory Store |
| Home shopping | Crate & Barrel Outlet, Pottery Barn Outlet, west elm outlet, Williams-Sonoma Outlet |
The home stores give local shoppers another reason to come. For a visitor flying home, they create a different calculation: a beautiful bargain still has to fit in the luggage. Before falling in love with something fragile or bulky, decide how it would travel.
Use the official center map to group your priority stores. Crossing back and forth because someone remembered a shop at the other end is how the final hour disappears.
From Manhattan: count the return before you leave
| Official address | 200 Tanger Mall Drive, Riverhead, NY 11901. Google Maps also identifies the center at 1770 W Main Street. |
|---|---|
| Road distance | About 73 miles from Times Square on the route checked October 13, 2026; distance varies by route. |
| Driving allowance | Our planning estimate: 1½–2½ hours each way, with extra time possible in traffic. |
| Regular hours | Monday–Saturday 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m.–7 p.m. |
| Suggested visit | 3–5 hours on site. Travel is additional. |
Our Times Square driving check showed 72.5 miles and 82 minutes early in the morning. That is a traffic snapshot, not a sensible promise for your departure time. The selected route included tolls. Tanger’s driving directions use I-495 Exit 73; follow navigation to the relevant part of the center rather than stopping at the first familiar shop sign.
Without a car, plan the entire outward and return journey with MTA travel information and the center’s address, including the connection from your final station or bus stop. Do not transfer Deer Park’s station-shuttle advice to Riverhead: they are separate destinations. We have not verified a current Riverhead station shuttle or a complete public-transit fare for this guide.
For many Manhattan visitors, that final connection is the deciding factor. A train route that sounds straightforward can be less appealing with several bags and a long wait for the return. Compare a nearer outlet before committing a day.
Two ways to enjoy the visit
Three hours: a focused circuit
Start with the item that is hardest to find in your size. Give your top two shops the first hour, then pause and decide whether the next stop adds something useful. Reserve the final half-hour for decisions and getting back to the car or pickup point. A shorter visit works when your shopping list has an end.
Five hours: room for the hunt
Choose a handful of anchor stores, then leave room between them for discoveries. Take a proper break after about two hours rather than waiting until everyone is hungry. With children, agree on a stopping point before another promising window appears. Tanger lists stroller rentals near OshKosh and the food court; specific access requirements still deserve a route check before travel.
If you are staying locally, the operator points to the Long Island Aquarium among area attractions. Treat a substantial family attraction as a separate outing or shorten the shopping session. Five hours of stores plus an aquarium plus the Manhattan round trip is a timetable, but not necessarily a holiday.
What the discount does—and does not—pay for
The best offer is on something you already wanted. Open Riverhead’s current deals before leaving, and read any membership or minimum-spend condition. The final selling price matters more than the percentage printed above it.
Keep purchases separate from the journey. For example, two adults allowing $200 each for merchandise have set aside $400, before transport, fuel or tolls where applicable, and food. This is a sample budget, not an average bill or a packaged day-trip price. If you rent a car mainly for shopping, include the rental cost in deciding whether the savings make sense.
For expensive purchases, compare the exact product, examine the fit and ask about returns before paying. Returning an unwanted item is much less convenient once the outlet is a flight away.
What visitors make of Riverhead
4.4 / 5
CenterNYC audience blend
Google: 4.5/5 from 7,917 reviews · Tripadvisor: 4.2/5 from 365 reviews. Checked October 13, 2026.
How this score works
We weight each platform by the square root of its review count, giving the larger sample more influence while retaining a second perspective. Both sources exceed 50 reviews. The result is rounded to one decimal; no personal or recent-trend bonus is added.
Two Google comments displayed as two and three months old praised the range of stores; one also highlighted the large parking area, the other the outdoor seating. Older Tripadvisor feedback is more mixed: a July 2023 visitor emphasized the walking and layout, while an August 2023 reviewer questioned the savings and described vacancies at that time. Those older accounts are not a claim about today’s occupancy.
The practical lesson is to shop from a current list, not from the reputation of an outlet you visited years ago. Read Google’s visitor reviews and Tripadvisor’s reviews alongside your own brand priorities.
See the layout before the shopping
Watch Suffolk Streets’ Riverhead drive-through video. The no-commentary dashcam view helps explain the scale better than a close-up of one window. It is an archive preview, not a current store directory, and opens only when you choose to watch.
For your own pictures, the storefronts provide a simple record of the day. Stand clear of driveways and entrances; ask before photographing inside a shop. You do not need to turn a parking lane into a photo studio.
Food and a return that respects Shabbat
Pack suitable kosher food unless you have separately confirmed a certified place along your route. We have not verified a kosher restaurant inside this center. A food-court listing or familiar chain does not establish branch certification.
Choose Sunday through Thursday outside Jewish holidays for a Shabbat-observant shopping day. The long return from eastern Long Island makes Friday afternoon a poor fit. For a meal after returning to the city, browse our kosher restaurant guides and leave enough time to get there.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tanger Riverhead in New York City?
No. It is in eastern Long Island. Our October 13 route from Times Square was about 73 road miles, with distance depending on the route.
Is this the same outlet as Deer Park?
No. Tanger Riverhead and Tanger Deer Park are separate centers. Compare their store lists and travel requirements before choosing.
Is Riverhead good for a rainy day?
Stores are indoors, but the connecting walks are open-air. An enclosed outlet is usually more comfortable in sustained rain.
How much of the day should I reserve?
For a Manhattan departure, allow most of the day: three to five hours shopping plus the outward and return journeys.
