NEW JERSEY · INDOOR OUTLET SHOPPING
By CenterNYC Editorial · Checked October 13, 2026
A rainy New York morning can become a museum day. It can also become the day you finally replace the sneakers you have been complaining about for six months. Jersey Gardens is for the second kind of traveler: a large indoor shopping center where a short list of favorite brands can easily turn into an afternoon.
At a glance: The Mills at Jersey Gardens is at 651 Kapkowski Road in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Regular hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Allow three to five hours for shopping, plus the round trip from Manhattan.

Is it worth leaving Manhattan for?
Yes, if shopping is something you genuinely enjoy and several stores on your wish list are here. Less so if you only need one T-shirt. The journey, the fitting rooms and the return with bags all take a bite out of a vacation day. A bargain feels less exciting when it costs the afternoon you wanted to spend in Central Park.
The indoor layout is a practical advantage in rain or cold. It does not make the trip effortless: there is still a terminal to navigate, a bus to catch and plenty of walking between shops. Our advice is to make this your main daytime outing, then keep the evening simple.
Which stores should go on your list?
The official directory checked October 13 includes the following. These are starting points, not a promise of a particular item, size or discount.
| Your shopping priority | Stores to look up |
|---|---|
| Sneakers and sportswear | Nike Factory Store, adidas Outlet Store, New Balance Factory Store, PUMA Outlet |
| Clothing and everyday outfits | Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, Old Navy Outlet, Banana Republic Factory, BOSS Outlet |
| Bags and accessories | Coach Outlet, Michael Kors Outlet, Cole Haan Outlet |
| Children and family shopping | Carter’s, Polo Ralph Lauren Children, Disney Store Outlet |
| Browsing across brands | Bloomingdale’s The Outlet Store, Marshalls, Burlington, Primark |
Choose three must-visit stores and two optional ones before leaving your hotel. That is enough direction to avoid spending the first hour wandering, without turning a shopping trip into a military operation. If shoes are the priority, try them before your feet are tired. If you are buying gifts, bring sizes rather than hoping everyone back home wears “medium.”
From Manhattan: give the journey its own space
For planning, allow roughly 45–90 minutes each way by road from Midtown, depending on traffic. This is an editorial allowance, not a live travel-time reading; add time to reach the terminal, wait for a bus and walk at either end. A three-hour shopping session can take much of the day once you include travel.
Simon’s transportation information lists NJ TRANSIT service from Port Authority Bus Terminal, including route 111. At the mall, the 111 stop is outside Entrance D. Use NJ TRANSIT’s current 111 timetable for your day, and the NJ TRANSIT app or terminal ticketing for the fare. This is a separate bus journey, not an NYC subway ride.
Driving? The address is 651 Kapkowski Road, Elizabeth, NJ 07201; the center’s directions use New Jersey Turnpike Exit 13A. Open Jersey Gardens in Google Maps for your actual departure point. Rideshare pickup is listed outside Entrances D and E.
Choose a return departure before you start shopping. Leave room for the last checkout line, not just the walk to the stop. A bag full of good deals is a poor consolation for missing the bus you planned around.
A shopping day with a sensible finish
Three hours: a focused mission
Visit your three priority stores, take a break, then return to the strongest option if you need to compare. Keep the final half-hour for purchases and getting back to your departure point. The goal is a useful haul, not proof that you entered every shop.
Five hours: time to browse
Start with the items you actually need, pause for the food you brought, and use the second half for accessories, gifts or another fitting. Couples with different interests can split briefly and agree on a clear meeting place. Families usually do better with shorter shop visits and breaks before everyone becomes impatient.
Simon lists accessible entrances A–E and accessible restrooms, with changing facilities in the restrooms. Guest Services is on the lower level near Tumi and Entrance D. For a specific mobility need, use the center’s services information before setting your route.
A discount is useful only if the final price works
Compare the actual item and final selling price with the same product elsewhere. A large percentage on a sign is not the same thing as a small bill. Look at fabric, fit and return conditions, especially if you will be leaving the country before a problem becomes obvious.
Simon lists a $10 coupon book at Guest Services. Look at the participating shops and exclusions before buying it: saving on a purchase you already intended to make is different from buying something extra to justify a coupon. The official deals page is a useful starting point for current promotions.
Set a merchandise budget separately from transport, food and any baggage charges on your flight home. For example, a $200 shopping allowance still needs a return travel budget; it is not a $200 total-day estimate. If you are mainly looking for entertainment with some shopping around it, compare American Dream instead. Its attractions bring a different set of ticket costs.
What shoppers say
In the Tripadvisor reviews we read, recent comments praise the choice of stores and the convenient Manhattan bus connection. The October 11 review also mentions weekend crowds and restroom cleanliness; a July review questions the value of some merchandise. These are individual experiences, not a guarantee about today’s conditions.
The useful takeaway is to arrive with a shopping list and realistic expectations. Some visitors find excellent buys; others do not find enough savings to justify the trip. Read the latest Tripadvisor reviews with your own priorities in mind.
Preview the indoor walk
Watch Pibry POV’s Jersey Gardens lower-level walking tour for a feel for the aisles and the scale of the place. This independent video is a visual preview; the current directory is the source for your store list. It opens on request rather than loading a video player while you read.
Kosher food and a Shabbat-friendly plan
Bring a kosher meal or snacks unless you have separately confirmed a suitable certified option. This guide does not identify a verified kosher restaurant inside the center. A familiar chain name does not establish the certification of its individual branch.
For Shabbat-observant travelers, choose Sunday through Thursday. Friday shopping across the Hudson leaves too much riding on traffic and the return journey; we would keep that day closer to your accommodation. Plan a meal from our kosher restaurant guides after returning, rather than hoping the mall’s food court will solve it.
Jersey Gardens or Woodbury?
If designer stores are your main reason for making a shopping trip, compare the Woodbury Common store list and travel guide. Woodbury has outdoor streets between its shops; Jersey Gardens keeps the shopping indoors. Choose by the brands you want and the weather, and give either destination its own time rather than trying to rush both.
Keep the rest of the day light
After returning to Port Authority, Times Square is an easy change of scene, but carrying bags through the crowds gets old quickly. Dropping purchases at your hotel may be the best extra stop of the day. Do not attach a tightly timed Broadway booking to an uncertain bus arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jersey Gardens in New York City?
No. It is in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and requires a separate journey from Manhattan.
Is it indoors?
The shopping center is indoors. Travel, bus waiting and the walk from parking still expose you to the weather.
How long should I allow?
Our suggestion is three to five hours for shopping, plus both journeys. A focused visit works best with a short list of stores.
What are the regular opening hours?
Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. See the official hours for holiday changes.
Is this the same place as American Dream?
No. They are separate New Jersey shopping destinations. Choose Jersey Gardens for this outlet and value-shopping trip; compare American Dream if paid indoor attractions are a main reason to go.
