NEWARK, NEW JERSEY · HOCKEY, BASKETBALL & CONCERTS
New York’s sports night does not have to end at the Hudson. At Prudential Center, the red jerseys belong to the New Jersey Devils, and the arena has a name that sounds more like a local meeting spot: The Rock. Come for the rush of hockey, the different energy of college basketball, or an artist whose tour brings you across the river.
At a glance: Prudential Center is at 25 Lafayette Street in downtown Newark, two blocks from Newark Penn Station. Choose an event first, buy through the official listing, and eat before arriving if you need supervised kosher food.

A hockey night with a different home crowd
If you have never watched hockey live, the first surprise is the speed. The puck disappears from one end and the whole game seems to follow it. Higher seats can make it easier to understand the play; seats close to the ice trade that overview for a more immediate sense of the action. Neither is automatically the right choice for a first visit.
For basketball, follow Seton Hall’s event listings at this arena rather than assuming every university home game takes place here. For concerts, the performer and stage layout matter more than the building’s reputation: a hockey seat map cannot tell you whether a concert seat has a side-stage view.
Choose the evening before choosing the seat
Start with the official event calendar. It is the best route to the correct date and authorized ticket link. Prices vary by event, demand and section, so compare the final checkout totals for the same seating area. A cheap listing with an awkward view is not necessarily a better evening.
For hockey, look at a side section if following the whole rink matters most. For a concert, inspect the event-specific map and any restricted-view label. Families should compare adjoining seats before getting attached to a low headline price. Add return transport, dinner and any parking to the ticket budget.
The arena normally opens doors about 60–90 minutes before an event; the event page gives the actual arrangement. Make that early arrival part of the night, particularly if you need accessible assistance or are unfamiliar with the station.

One reason to arrive before the puck drops
For a Devils regular-season game, the warm-up can be a small highlight of its own. Even with an upper-level ticket, the arena allows visitors to watch from designated lower-level rows while those seats are unoccupied: rows 1–6 of sections 2, 3, 4, 12, 13 and 14. Give way to the ticket holder and return to your own seat when warm-ups end, roughly 20 minutes before the game. It is a chance to see the speed up close without choosing your whole evening around an expensive rink-side seat. The official warm-up policy was checked October 12, 2026; this applies to Devils regular-season games, not every event.
New York Penn and Newark Penn are different stations
This is the detail to get right before stepping onto a train. From Manhattan’s Penn Station, NJ Transit trains serve Newark Penn; from Lower Manhattan, PATH offers a route from World Trade Center. Once at Newark Penn, the arena is two blocks away. Use the arena’s transit directions to choose the route for your starting point and check the return service for your date.
As a planning allowance, set aside roughly 60–90 minutes from a Midtown starting point to your seat, including the walk to the station, waiting, the train, the walk in Newark and security. This is a buffer, not a timetable or a live journey estimate. From elsewhere in the city, build the trip from your actual starting point. Driving adds traffic, paid parking and an exit queue, so rail is often the more straightforward choice for Manhattan visitors.
Open Prudential Center in Google Maps. Save your route back before the event, while you are still thinking clearly about platforms rather than the final score.
Dinner first makes this evening easier
We have not verified a currently supervised kosher concession inside Prudential Center. A menu describing a product as “kosher” does not establish the supervision of its preparation or serving counter. For a dependable plan, eat before leaving Manhattan and use our kosher restaurant guides to arrange the meal.
Outside food and drink are generally prohibited. The arena asks visitors with religious dietary requirements to contact Guest Services in advance; arrange an exception before bringing food, rather than trying to negotiate at security. Normal event admission does not allow you to leave for dinner and return.
For Shabbat-observant travelers, choose a Sunday–Thursday event that does not fall on a Jewish holiday. Friday afternoon is a poor fit for a cross-river outing, and we do not recommend Friday-night or Shabbat events.
Bring the family, leave the backpack
The current bag limit is 14 × 12 × 6 inches; backpacks of any size are prohibited. Medical and parenting bags may qualify for an exception and are screened. An outside locker service is available, but leaving unnecessary bags at your accommodation is simpler.
Children under two may generally sit on a parent’s or guardian’s lap without a separate ticket, subject to the event’s policy. Confirm the rule for your child’s exact age before purchase, especially for family shows. A sporting event’s loud music and crowd can also be a lot for a young child; hearing protection and a realistic bedtime are worth considering.
Accessible seats are sold through the ticketing provider. Read the arena’s accessibility guide before booking if you need a particular seat location or assistance. Do not substitute an ordinary aisle seat for a confirmed accessible place.
Where it fits in a New York trip
A Midtown afternoon, an early meal and a train to Newark make a more comfortable combination than trying to squeeze another major attraction in immediately before the game. If crossing the river adds too much travel, compare Madison Square Garden above Penn Station. For another hockey option, see UBS Arena; for Brooklyn, compare Barclays Center.
For a photo, the exterior gives you the building and its Newark setting without needing an event ticket. Inside, camera restrictions vary: travel light, avoid blocking an aisle and check the event rules before packing anything beyond your phone.
