Broadway · Musical theater · Midtown Manhattan
Being called wicked is one thing. Getting to tell your side of the story is another. Wicked takes a familiar villain and gives her a friendship, a point of view and a voice large enough to fill a Broadway theater. The green skin is memorable. The uneasy question of who gets to decide what “good” means may stay with you longer.
At a glance: Wicked plays at the Gershwin Theatre, 222 West 51st Street. Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Recommended age: 8+; children under 5 are not admitted.

Before Dorothy, there were two very different young women
Elphaba is an outsider with unusual abilities and very visible differences. Glinda understands popularity rather better. They meet in Oz, initially finding little reason to like each other. Their developing friendship gives the musical a more interesting center than a simple contest between a good witch and a bad one.
The story asks what happens when personal loyalty collides with public reputation. Who is believed? Who is easy to blame? How much does fitting in cost? Those questions give the spectacle something to hold on to, especially for teenagers who know how quickly a group can decide what someone is like.
Stephen Schwartz’s songs include Popular, Defying Gravity and For Good. You can enjoy their energy without knowing every plot turn. For a spoiler-free introduction, use the production’s official story page; save the scene-by-scene summaries for after the show.
Thirty seconds in Oz

Choose it for the voices and the friendship
Our strongest fit is a group that wants a big musical and enjoys getting involved in its characters: older children, teenagers, friends, couples and adults who like a fantasy with emotional stakes. It is a substantial evening, so give it the same space in your plans as a major museum visit.
For visitors with limited English, music and visual action help, but the shifting relationships and ideas deserve attention too. Familiarity with Oz gives you a starting point. It does not replace following the dialogue. Our suggestion is to read a short, spoiler-free introduction together, then let the stage do the rest.
A family outing works best when it is chosen for the children you actually have, rather than the children everyone hopes will sit perfectly still. A matinee may suit an early bedtime; a quiet afternoon may be more valuable than fitting in one more attraction before an evening performance.
How much, and where can you save?
Use Wicked’s official ticket page for Broadway Direct booking. Buying at the Gershwin box office avoids service fees. Standard prices vary with the performance and seat; compare your actual dates before treating a seller’s lowest advertised price as your budget.
| Route | Verified offer |
|---|---|
| Regular purchase | Broadway.com advertised tickets from $97.28 when checked October 11. This is that seller’s starting price, not an average or an official quote for your date. |
| In-person Rush | $45, including the $2 facility fee. Limited same-day supply; maximum two per person; seats may have partial views. See the official Rush rules. |
| Digital lottery | $55 including fees for selected performances. Entry opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. the day before; winners have one hour to purchase. |
| Student offer | $59 at the box office with valid college or university ID, selected Tuesday–Thursday performances in the current month, subject to availability; up to two tickets per ID. |
For a couple, two successful lottery tickets total $110. Two available Rush tickets total $90. Those are useful possibilities, not a booking strategy for a family that must sit together on its only free night. Keep a different evening plan available if the low-cost route does not work out.
For regular tickets, compare the final order total rather than multiplying the advertisement and stopping there. Dinner, transport and souvenirs sit outside the show budget. If this is the one musical you particularly want, securing suitable seats may matter more than chasing the largest discount.
A good view is more useful than an impressive row number
The upper level gives a broader view of a large stage picture; orchestra seating brings the performers closer. The production warns that the front mezzanine safety bar can affect shorter patrons and children. Ask about the exact seat rather than assuming the first row is automatically a treat.
Accessible spaces are designated, and many other seats require stairs. Arrange wheelchair or transfer seating using the official accessibility information. Free captioning and audio-description options are listed there too. Outside food is not allowed in the building.

The audience enthusiasm is clear; the source matters
In the comments inspected from late September and early October, the singing, emotional response and pleasure of seeing the story live stood out. A September 25 reviewer described a successful family outing with two teenage boys; an October 1 solo visitor valued the mixture of humor, dialogue and singing. These are individual reports, not a representative survey of every performance.
Adam Feldman’s March 2025 Time Out review gives the production four stars. He emphasizes the friendship at the center of the story and its themes of propaganda and exclusion, alongside the staging and score. That helps explain why an adult might choose Wicked for more than the spectacle. The review’s cast references belong to its publication date.
Keep the afternoon nearby
MoMA is a natural option for an earlier Midtown visit if modern art interests your group. Top of the Rock offers a very different kind of stage picture: the real city from above. Choose one substantial extra, then leave a comfortable gap before the theater.
If everyone is already tired, a short visit to Times Square and an unhurried meal can be enough. You do not get extra value from a theater ticket by arriving exhausted.
For kosher dining, use our restaurant guides and verify the particular branch’s current certificate. Plan to eat before entry rather than rely on theater snacks. For Shabbat-observant visitors, choose a weekday; Friday afternoon plans need a generous margin before candle lighting.
For a different first-musical mood, compare Aladdin’s magical comedy or browse our Broadway guides. Pick the story and style your group wants, not simply the most recognizable poster.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wicked suitable for a five-year-old?
Admission begins at five, but the production recommends eight and older. The minimum entry age and suitability recommendation are different.
Is Wicked mostly music?
It is a musical with songs and spoken scenes. Following the dialogue helps with the relationships and the story’s ideas.
Are discounted tickets guaranteed?
No. Rush supply and lottery availability are limited. Use advance booking when the date or seat arrangement matters more than flexibility.
