The Lion King on Broadway: Tickets, Age & Visitor Guide

Broadway · Musical theater · Midtown Manhattan

A person walks onto a stage, and somehow you see an animal. The pleasure of The Lion King is not that it hides every theatrical trick. It lets you notice the human imagination behind the creature, then invites you to believe in it anyway. For a first Broadway evening, that is a compelling place to start.

At a glance: The Lion King plays at the Minskoff Theatre, 200 West 45th Street, near Times Square. The production runs approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including one intermission and is intended for ages 6 and up. Every guest needs a ticket.

A young lion, a very large inheritance

Simba grows up expecting to inherit a kingdom. His father, Mufasa, sees leadership as responsibility; the cub initially sees rather more freedom and excitement. Meanwhile, his uncle Scar has a different idea about who should be in charge. That family tension gives the musical its momentum long before anyone needs the ending explained.

The larger story is about growing into a life you did not fully understand as a child: the pull of home, the attraction of escape and the difficulty of deciding who you want to become. Children can follow the adventure. Adults may recognize the more uncomfortable business of meeting expectations and choosing which responsibilities to accept.

Onstage, the animals are created through a mixture of performers, masks, costumes and puppetry. Watching those elements work together is part of the point. A familiar film becomes an occasion to look closely again, rather than simply wait for the next recognizable scene.

For families, music lovers and grown-ups who still want wonder

This is a strong candidate for people who want a substantial musical, a recognizable story and a visual world to get lost in. Songs such as Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight give familiar landmarks along the way. Knowing the film can help visitors with limited English follow the action, although dialogue and jokes still carry part of the story.

Six and up is the production’s recommendation, not a promise that every six-year-old will enjoy two and a half hours. Think about your child’s comfort with a long performance and dramatic family conflict. The official visitor information also warns of loud noises, flashing lights, smoke and fog effects. For a sensitive child, those details matter more than the Disney name.

Couples need not borrow a child to justify going. A visually ambitious musical can make a celebratory evening in its own right. If your ideal date is an intimate conversation or a small, dialogue-driven play, choose another kind of performance. If you want a shared spectacle to talk about afterward, this belongs on the shortlist.

What the audience loves, and what a critic adds

The Broadway.com comments inspected from late September and early October repeatedly praised the costumes, singing, staging and emotional impact. One September 23 visitor also reported difficulty hearing some early dialogue before the sound improved. These comments give a useful picture of what individual ticket buyers noticed, rather than a guarantee about a future performance.

There is a useful counterpoint in Adam Feldman’s four-star Time Out review from 2012. He admired Julie Taymor’s puppetry and stagecraft while finding some of the comic material closer to a theme-park experience. That older review helps explain the production’s artistic appeal and its limits; it does not assess today’s cast.

Tickets, prices and choosing a seat

Start with the production’s official ticket calendar, which links to Broadway Direct. Choose the performance first, then compare the seats and final checkout total. The calendar is more reliable than a repeating weekly schedule copied into a travel guide.

Where Minskoff Theatre, 200 West 45th Street, Manhattan.
How long Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, including one intermission.
Age guidance Intended for guests 6 and up; every guest needs a ticket.
Price snapshot Broadway.com displayed tickets starting at $130.56 on October 11, 2026. This is that seller’s advertised starting price, not an average or a quote for your date. Compare it with the official booking link and final fees.
Planning time Allow around three hours for arrival and the performance, plus the journey and any meal.

At that advertised starting figure, two tickets would be $261.12 before any additional charges not included by the seller. A family should price the actual seats together before building the evening around a headline offer. Dinner and transport are separate expenses.

Our seating preference for a production with large stage pictures is a clear, reasonably centered view rather than automatically the closest row. A mezzanine view can help you take in the whole composition; orchestra seats bring the performers closer. Read any restricted-view note for the specific seat. Neither level is a universal winner.

Access and arrival: choose the right seats first

The theater has escalators and a limited elevator service. Crucially, the official accessibility page identifies the designated wheelchair and companion seats at the rear of the orchestra as the seats without steps. Do not assume that an elevator makes every row step-free. Accessible tickets are available through the official seller’s seating filter or the box office.

Assisted-listening devices, closed captions and English audio description are available at every performance without charge, with a valid photo ID required as a deposit. Ask an usher or house manager on arrival. Save your Broadway Direct ticket to your mobile wallet before reaching the entrance.

Give the show a little room in your day

The easiest pairing is a short wander through Times Square, a meal and the performance. For a quieter afternoon, choose Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. Art lovers could visit MoMA earlier in the day, then leave a proper break before the curtain. A packed museum afternoon and a full-length musical can be a long combination for children.

For kosher food, plan a separate meal using our kosher restaurant guides and the branch’s current certificate and hours. The theater sells refreshments, but this guide does not certify its concessions. Outside food is not allowed, so a packed dinner belongs before your arrival.

For a Shabbat-observant trip, choose a weekday performance and leave Friday afternoon comfortably clear of candle lighting. If considering Saturday night, allow enough time after Shabbat ends for travel and entry. A ticket time is not a reason to rush that calculation.
