HUDSON VALLEY · HIKING · A DAY OUTSIDE NYC

Mohonk looks like the place where a storybook illustrator would send you for the weekend: a sprawling Victorian building, a lake and a wooded hillside rising behind it. The photograph makes arriving seem effortless. The ticket you choose decides whether your day begins with a substantial walk or a different kind of resort visit.

At a glance: Mohonk Mountain House is a private resort near New Paltz, about 90 miles north of New York City. Day visitors need an advance reservation. For a first hiking visit, our suggestion is four to six hours on the property, plus roughly two to three hours driving each way from Midtown, depending on traffic.

Choose the day you actually want

The hiking pass: $35 for ages 13+, $30 for ages 4–12, and free for ages three and under. Buy online within the 72-hour booking window; passes are nonrefundable. Access is from 7 a.m. until dusk, with arrival required by 3 p.m. The pass covers trails and grounds, not the hotel interior or swimming. Parking is at the Gatehouse, about 2.2 miles from the Mountain House, without a shuttle. Bring your food and water. See the official hiking pass and trail conditions.

That parking detail changes the family calculation. A lake-loving child may still have strong opinions about the walk back. Choose this ticket because your group wants a hiking day, rather than because it is the least expensive way to get near the building.

Type of visitWhat to consider
Hiking dayBest when walking and scenery are the main purpose. Two adults and two children aged 4–12 pay $130 for admission, before travel and meals.
Summer Sports PassThe dedicated page lists $125 per person, June–October, including a half-hour boat rental and one hour of tennis or pickleball court time. Court reservations and boat availability have separate conditions.
Winter Sports PassThe dedicated page lists $125 per person, mid-January–March, weather permitting. Equipment and available activities depend on conditions; spa, fitness center and indoor pool are excluded.
Dining, spa or overnight stayChoose the actual package and date for its price, access and parking. A room reservation is a different purchase from a walking pass.

Use the Summer Sports Pass, Winter Sports Pass and day-experience pages to compare. Seasonal products are not a promise of availability on your date. The sports pages currently show $125, although an older amount remains in the general FAQ; confirm the total in the booking screen.

Build the day around one good walk

Start with the trail map and a return time. Choose one scenic goal, leave room for a packed lunch and photographs, and treat the walk back as part of the outing. A day with fewer destinations can feel much more generous than one spent watching the clock.

Sky Top is an obvious candidate for a view; the lake and gardens offer different ways to enjoy the setting. The official hiking page labels the Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze a strenuous rock scramble, suggested for ages eight and up. It involves tight passages and physical effort. That is a choice for a willing, capable group, not a shortcut to add casually.

For couples, agree on the kind of day before buying: one person imagining hiking boots and the other imagining a quiet resort afternoon is a surprisingly easy planning mistake. For families, let the least energetic walker help set the route. For a solo visit, share your plan and carry the map rather than relying on another group always being ahead.

The journey from Manhattan

The resort address is 1000 Mountain Rest Road, New Paltz, NY 12561. Its official driving directions route NYC arrivals through I-87 Exit 18 and New Paltz toward the Gatehouse. Navigate to the entry and parking area for your particular reservation.

Our two-to-three-hour driving allowance from Midtown is a planning estimate, not a live navigation result. The round trip alone can take four to six hours or longer. Add your visit, food and stops before deciding whether this is the right day trip. A busy autumn weekend deserves more margin than a quiet weekday.

Open the drive to the Gatehouse in Google Maps. If you are traveling without a car, arrange the onward and return transport before buying; arriving in New Paltz is not the same as reaching your trail start.

Mountain House and Mohonk Preserve are different visits

Mohonk Preserve has its own entrances and fees. Its current hiking fee is $15 Monday–Thursday and $20 Friday–Sunday or holidays; children 15 and under enter free with an adult. Trailheads open sunrise to sunset. Those are Preserve rules, not a discounted version of the Mountain House resort package.

Choose which landscape and route you want first, then buy the corresponding access. Similar names and nearby trails do not make the two admission systems interchangeable.

Food and Shabbat planning

A packed kosher meal is the straightforward choice for a hiking day. We have not verified a certified kosher dining arrangement at the resort. If food is included in a package, ask about your requirements before committing to it; a meal you cannot use changes the value of the booking.

For Shabbat-observant visitors, Sunday through Thursday gives the trip more breathing room. Avoid a long Friday outing that leaves the drive back close to candle lighting. An overnight Shabbat stay needs its own advance discussion of meals, room access and other practical arrangements; it is not covered by this day-trip recommendation.

Let the landscape do the work

For the classic composition, give the lake room beside the building rather than zooming tightly onto the facade. Along the route, a person in the frame helps show the scale of the landscape. In the gardens, look for a path leading through the planting without stepping into the beds.

At a viewpoint, distant layers depend on visibility; a hazy day will look different from the brochure. Choose a safe place to stop and leave time to return. Drones are prohibited on the property.

What guests love—and what deserves a second look

4.3/5 · CenterNYC audience blend. Google: 4.5/5 from 4,469 reviews; Tripadvisor: 4.1/5 from 3,011 reviews. Checked October 13, 2026. These ratings describe the hotel and resort experience, not just the hiking pass.

The guest accounts we read repeatedly returned to the setting, walks and range of activities. Positive reports described the lake, gardens and service as reasons to slow down and stay. Price is the important counterpoint: some guests questioned the value, and a recent spa review described noise interrupting the hoped-for quiet. For a day visitor, that makes the choice of pass especially important—pay for the experience you actually intend to use.

Watch the trails before choosing your pass

A real history behind the storybook outline

According to Mohonk’s history, Albert Smiley bought a ten-room inn and surrounding land in 1869. The small beginning gradually became the much larger Mountain House. That slow growth is part of the attraction: this is a place with a history of receiving guests, not simply a modern building dressed for a photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit without staying overnight?

Yes. Reserve the appropriate day experience before arrival, choosing it for the access and activities you want.

Does a hiking ticket let me inside the hotel?

No. Choose a different day package if interior resort access is important to your visit.

How long should I allow?

Our first-visit suggestion is four to six hours for hiking, adjusted to your group and route, plus the round-trip journey from Manhattan.

Is this a rainy-day alternative to New York?

Not for a hiking plan. Trail conditions can change, and an outdoor ticket does not become a spa or hotel-interior ticket when the weather turns.
