Mezzrow NYC: Piano Jazz, Tickets & West Village Evenings

קראו בעברית · Read in Hebrew

WEST VILLAGE · AN EVENING BUILT AROUND THE PIANO

A piano trio can make a small room feel enormous. The pianist sends out a phrase, the bass answers, the drums change its direction—and suddenly an hour has passed without anyone needing a giant screen or a spectacular entrance. If that sounds like your kind of New York evening, put Mezzrow on the list.

Mezzrow is a jazz listening room at 163 West 10th Street. Its piano-centered identity makes it a natural choice for attentive listeners and couples who want music to be the occasion. Book a specific set through SmallsLIVE, arrive early and plan dinner separately.

The piano is the starting point

Spike Wilner opened Mezzrow in September 2014, drawing inspiration from the piano rooms of an earlier New York, particularly Bradley’s. The name honors Mezz Mezzrow, associated with the book Really the Blues. Smalls, its sister club, is across the street; the two share a musical family and booking website, but not an interchangeable ticket.

That distinction matters when choosing a night. Do you want the particular pianist on the calendar, a singer whose phrasing catches your ear, or simply a first introduction to a small jazz group? Begin there. A room with a reputation is useful; a band you are curious about is better.

For a date, think of Mezzrow as the shared experience between conversations. Have the long catch-up over dinner. During the music, the reward is noticing the same small moment—a pause, a sudden change of tempo, the way one player responds to another. It is a different sort of romance from a rooftop view.

At that example price, a couple starts at $70 for two tickets, plus two drinks and any additional fees. Dinner and transport are separate. It is not an all-inclusive package, and the price belongs to that performance rather than every night on the calendar.

The Ray Gallon Trio listing names Ray Gallon on piano, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. Use the live calendar for your own travel dates. Read the venue label: Mezzrow, Smalls and Jazzcultural all appear there.

The official ticket policy is nonrefundable; changes require advance contact under its exchange rules. Walk-in admission depends on availability. A large group should not assume it can sit together.

What the audience values

4.6 / 5 · CenterNYC audience blend
Google: 4.6 from 1,398 reviews · Tripadvisor: 4.5 from 118 reviews. Checked October 13, 2026.

A January 2026 Tripadvisor visitor emphasized the tiny room and a warm welcome, with arriving early part of the experience. A February listener praised Whitney Marchelle’s performance but could not stay for the second show because it had sold out. The useful lesson is specific: liking the first set does not create availability for the next one.

These accounts support choosing Mezzrow for close listening. They do not turn a small room into a spacious lounge. If personal space matters more to you than proximity to the musicians, weigh that before booking.

How we combine the ratings

Both sources exceed 50 reviews. We weight their scores by the square root of each review count and round to one decimal, so Google’s larger sample carries more influence without excluding Tripadvisor. No personal-visit bonus or separate recent-trend adjustment is included.

Hear the room before choosing your night

This recording from the Mezzrow Jazz Club channel features the Spike Wilner Trio on October 5, 2026. It gives the music room to breathe—and gives you a better starting point than choosing solely from a star rating. Your date will have its own lineup.

Dinner first, jazz second

Our suggested visit allowance is about 90 minutes for arrival and one set, with the journey and meal added separately. An early set leaves time for a gentle walk afterward; a later set gives dinner more breathing room. Choose whichever fits your energy rather than making lateness part of the achievement.

Browse our kosher restaurant guides before setting the evening’s timetable. Mezzrow is not a kosher dining recommendation. A sealed bottle of water with a disposable cup is a straightforward option to ask about; alcoholic drinks and preparation should meet your own kosher requirements.

For Shabbat-observant travel, choose Sunday through Thursday outside Jewish holidays. Leave Friday afternoon for preparations. A Saturday-night performance needs enough time after local Shabbat ends to reach the club comfortably.

Compare the nearby Smalls guide if you are choosing between lineups, or the Village Vanguard for another historic jazz setting. Our music section keeps the alternatives together.
