Chelsea Piers NYC: Golf, Skating & Family Activities

Chelsea · Golf, skating and indoor sports

New York usually asks you to look at something. Chelsea Piers gives you a club, a pair of skates or a bat and lets you become the entertainment. A golf ball disappears toward the Hudson, a child discovers that ice is less cooperative than pavement, and suddenly the family has a story that does not begin with another queue.

At a glance: Chelsea Piers is a waterfront sports complex on Manhattan’s West Side. Book golf, public skating or a Field House activity separately. Golf sessions last 55 minutes and include two players; the published bay rates range from $48 to $74 before equipment and additional-player charges.

Choose the sport first, then plan the visit

Chelsea Piers is a collection of sports facilities, not one attraction with an all-access admission ticket. That makes it flexible, but it also makes “we’ll just turn up and see” a weaker plan than it sounds. A lesson, a public skating session and a golf bay each have their own booking arrangements.

For a couple or friends, the driving range is the simplest place to start: you can compete over the least embarrassing shot, even if neither person has played a proper round. For children who want movement rather than sightseeing, look at the Field House’s age-specific drop-ins. Skating works best when the whole group actually wants to skate, rather than when one enthusiastic person has volunteered everybody else.

What visitors make of the waterfront sports stop

The river setting is part of the attraction, even for visitors who are not serious golfers. A recent Google review by Ghislaine Leon describes the Golf Club as a place to spend time with family or friends and enjoy the Hudson views. On Tripadvisor, an April 2023 family review by WRNL describes sharing a golf bay with two teenagers as a distinctive Manhattan outing. Those accounts explain the appeal better than treating this as another box to tick between museums.

Golf with a river view—and a price that changes with the clock

The appeal is the setting as much as the swing. You are practicing at the edge of Manhattan, with the Hudson beyond the range rather than a suburban car park. The stalls have year-round weather protection, and the Inrange system tracks shots and offers games such as Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. A beginner gets something to aim at; an experienced golfer gets numbers to argue with.

The official booking system describes a 55-minute session for two golfers. A bay accommodates up to four people, with an extra fee for additional golfers. Published weekday prices are below; the time bands describe the session’s starting time, not how long you can stay.

Weekday start timePublished bay price
7 a.m.–12:59 p.m.$48
1–3:59 p.m.$57
4–8:59 p.m.$74
9–11:30 p.m.$52

Weekend rates are $48 before 9 a.m., $62 from 9–9:59 a.m., $74 from 10 a.m.–8:59 p.m., and $52 from 9–11 p.m. A driver rental is $7; other clubs are $4 each. For example, a $48 bay plus two $4 club rentals comes to $56 before any additional checkout charges. It is a useful way to compare an early visit with the $74 peak bay price. Additional-player charges and any checkout fees should be included in your final booking total.

See the official driving-range rates and book a bay. Indoor Full Swing simulators are a separate option; the range’s prices should not be assumed to cover them.

One bay, one 55-minute session

Build this part of the day around the time on your Golf Club reservation. Head to the driving range at Pier 59, collect any rental clubs, and share the bay during your 55-minute session. Keep the waterfront stroll for afterward; it is not part of the booked playing time.

Four is the bay’s total capacity, not four extra players. The standard reservation includes two golfers, with an additional charge for extra golfers. A larger group needs enough separately confirmed bays; reserving more than three stalls requires contacting the Special Events department. The official dated booking calendar lists the sessions. Duration and booking-group information rechecked October 12, 2026.

Sky Rink: ice does not have a winter season here

Sky Rink’s two full-size indoor rinks make skating possible throughout the year. That is a useful alternative to the seasonal outdoor rinks, particularly if skating matters more to you than a postcard setting. The important distinction is between the building being open and a public session being available: hockey, lessons and other programs also use the ice.

Choose General Skating from the official Sky Rink page. Advance registration is strongly recommended. Skate and helmet rentals are available on arrival; use the selected session’s booking total for admission and rental costs. The current registration listing starts at age three. Do not confuse that with a promise that every three-year-old will enjoy an entire session.

Allow extra time to change shoes and settle nervous beginners. A warm layer is useful even when the pavement outside feels like summer. If a member of the group needs an adapted skating arrangement, ask the rink before booking rather than treating ordinary public skating as automatically accessible.

Small children, big energy and the Field House

The Field House drop-in calendar is particularly useful for visiting families because it lists individual sessions with ages, times and prices. In the October 11–17 calendar, Toddler Gym was $20 for ages 0–5, with sessions ranging from an hour to 90 minutes. Adult gymnastics sessions for ages 17 and up were $40 for 90 minutes; an adult soccer class was $40 for 75 minutes.

Those are dated examples, not a weekly timetable to copy into a future holiday. Pick your actual travel day and match the age band before paying. A toddler’s play session can be the main event of their morning; adults do not need to attach two museums to it to make the day worthwhile.

Take a look inside before booking

The Field House’s official 360-degree virtual tour lets you explore the spaces before choosing a session. It opens separately so the interactive panorama does not slow down this guide on your phone.

A batting cage is not just a batting cage

The four Field House batting cages differ by speed and batting hand. Some are right-handed only and one is left-handed only. The ProBatter cage is for ages 14 and up; the other cages accept ages five and up. Under-18s need an accompanying adult. Bats and helmets are provided, and closed-toe shoes are required.

For a first attempt, choose by ability and age rather than by whichever slot is free. Online rentals are offered 2–14 days ahead. The official page describes typical availability from noon to 8 p.m. between September and mid-June, with more restricted summer access. The booking calendar determines the actual slot and price.

Give the sports session a West Side afternoon

Choose one paid activity, then leave room for the waterfront. The High Line offers a completely different viewpoint over the neighborhood. Farther south, Little Island adds planted paths and river views; the Whitney makes sense for a group that wants American art as well as movement. Pick one companion stop rather than turning all three into compulsory homework.

For a first visit, a practical allowance is about two hours around one sports booking, including check-in and changing equipment. Longer Field House sessions or several activities need more time. Use the specific facility entrance in Google Maps; “Chelsea Piers” covers a substantial complex, not one doorway.

For photographs: make the waterfront part of the walk, especially when the late-afternoon light reaches the river. At the range, take a picture from a safe position behind the hitting area without distracting another golfer. Ask before photographing other children inside sports facilities.

Kosher food and Shabbat planning

Food and drinks are offered at the golf bays, but this guide does not have a verified kosher certificate for that service. Plan your meal separately using our kosher restaurant guides, and ask the activity venue about bringing your own food if needed. For a Shabbat-observant trip, choose Sunday through Thursday outside Jewish holidays; do not leave a Friday sports booking competing with getting home before candle lighting.

Frequently asked questions

Does one ticket cover all of Chelsea Piers?

No. Golf, skating and Field House activities have separate reservations and charges. Choose the activity before planning your budget.

How long is a golf session?

The official booking system lists 55 minutes for two golfers. A bay can hold up to four people, with an additional fee for extra golfers.

Is Chelsea Piers useful on a rainy day?

Indoor skating and Field House activities offer indoor options. Golf stalls have weather protection, but the waterfront range is not the same experience as a fully enclosed room.

Can young children use the batting cages?

The standard cages accept ages five and up; the ProBatter cage is for ages 14 and up. Under-18s need an accompanying adult, and closed-toe shoes are required.
