Midtown Manhattan · Basketball, hockey and live music
CenterNYC editorial guide · Checked October 11, 2026
The song sounds different when thousands of people sing it back to the stage. So does a basketball game when the whole building rises before the ball reaches the basket. Madison Square Garden is for that kind of New York evening: loud, shared and built around something you really want to see. Beneath it, Penn Station keeps moving people through the city as if nothing unusual is happening upstairs.
Madison Square Garden is the Midtown arena above Penn Station, home to the Knicks and Rangers and a major concert venue. Choose between an event ticket and the separate, approximately one-hour guided tour. Tour prices currently run $48–$49 for adults and $43–$44 for children ages 5–12 or seniors 65+.

First choose the night, then the famous building
A Knicks game, a Rangers game and a concert share an address, not a personality. Basketball gives you recognizable scoring, bursts of action and plenty happening around the court. Hockey rewards watching the whole sheet of ice: the movement can be thrilling even while you are still learning to follow the puck. At a concert, the artist matters more than the prestige of the room. A favorite song can justify an arena evening; an unfamiliar act does not become your favorite just because it plays the Garden.
For couples, make it a night around a shared interest. For children, choose the specific event, its content and its finish time. This is not a quiet date or an easy escape from sensory overload. If your group wants an experience with a clear finish and less commitment than a full event, consider the tour instead.
Tickets and budgets at a glance
| Experience | What to budget | What the ticket buys |
|---|---|---|
| Knicks, Rangers or concert | Varies by event and seat | The named event and ticketed location; a tour is separate |
| Adult guided tour | $48–$49 | Approximately 60 minutes |
| Tour, child ages 5–12 or senior 65+ | $43–$44 | The same guided experience, subject to available areas |
| Two adults and two children ages 5–12, tour | $182–$186 | Tickets only; allow separately for travel and food |
The official tour page says these online prices include a $5 service fee and that all tour sales are final. Choose a date with availability before shaping your day around it. For events, start with the Garden’s official calendar, or the linked Knicks and Rangers ticket pages. Compare the total for your whole group at checkout, not only the first price in the seat search.
Where to sit: a court is not a concert stage
Open the official seating map for your event. The position of a concert stage changes what a section faces; advice about a great basketball seat does not automatically transfer to a concert. A floor ticket can also be a standing-area ticket. If sitting matters, choose a ticket that specifies a seat and read any restricted-view description before paying.
For a first sports visit, think about the experience you want: close detail or a broader view of the game. A higher vantage point can make the patterns easier to follow, while being closer brings faces and physical movement into focus. There is no single best seat for every visitor, event and budget.
The daytime tour: the Garden between its big moments
The tour looks at the arena as a working building. The official route describes backstage areas, a luxury suite and the Hyundai Bridge, where the distinctive concave ceiling becomes part of the attraction. Depending on what is happening that day, the floor might hold a basketball court, ice or a stage being assembled. That changing identity is more interesting than a promise of one perfect photograph.
Knicks and Rangers locker rooms are offered on non-game days, but venue activity can restrict access. If a particular room is the reason you want to visit, ask about that date before buying. The tour desk and box office are on Seventh Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets. See official tour availability on Ticketmaster.
For the tour: arrive at the Chase Square tour desk 10–15 minutes before your booked start. The guided visit lasts about an hour and is conducted in English. Children under five join without their own ticket; the child price above applies to ages 5–12. Under-18s are encouraged to come with a parent or guardian, rather than formally barred from visiting alone.
Wheelchair users can join the tour; tell the staff at check-in if you need the accessible route. There is a restroom stop during the tour, but the operator says restrooms are not available before or afterward. Go City pass holders exchange their pass at the desk for an available timed ticket: owning the pass alone does not reserve a departure.
Tour details rechecked October 12, 2026 on the official tour FAQ. As a dated example, Ticketmaster showed October 13 departures from 10:30 a.m. through 3 p.m., with standard admission at $49 including fees before any applicable tax. This is a snapshot, not a daily timetable.
What visitors say about the Garden
The room can be as memorable as the event, though not every seat feels generous. In the Tripadvisor reviews we checked, Amanda E praised an organized exit after an October 2026 concert but found food expensive. KBD87’s August review liked the staff and acoustics while noting tight seats and legroom. Their practical lesson is useful: eat beforehand, give yourself time to find your section and choose seats for comfort as well as the view.

Kosher food and a Shabbat-friendly plan
Make the kosher meal part of the evening before you enter, rather than leaving dinner to chance inside the arena. Our kosher restaurant guides help you choose a separate stop; match the restaurant’s address and serving hours to your event. An arena concession’s past operation is not a current kosher certificate. If you want to buy food inside, confirm the event’s options with Guest Relations and check the relevant supervision or sealed-product certification.
MSG’s official policy does not allow outside food or beverages. Medical conditions or specific needs should be arranged in advance through Guest Relations. For Shabbat-observant travelers, our suggested event nights are Sunday through Thursday, excluding Jewish holidays. We do not recommend Friday-afternoon or Shabbat outings.
Getting there without turning arrival into another event
The address is 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001. Take the 1, 2, 3, A, C or E to 34th Street–Penn Station. Herald Square is another approach, served by B, D, F, M, N, Q and R; PATH arrives at 33rd Street. The official directions include accessible routes from Penn Station. Open MSG in Google Maps.
Keep the entrance shown for your event handy and arrive with time for security and finding your section. Penn Station being underneath the arena is convenient, but the crowd leaving together still takes time to move. Choose your train home with that in mind.
A small bag makes a better companion
Bags need not be clear, but they must fit under your seat; anything larger than 22 × 14 × 9 inches is prohibited. There is no bag or coat check. Strollers must collapse and fit under the seat too. Leaving luggage at your hotel is much easier than discovering this at the door.
Most events have no general minimum age, though individual events may impose one. MSG strongly recommends that under-18s attend with a parent or guardian. Usually, a child under two can sit on an adult’s lap without a separate ticket; some family shows require tickets for children over one. The event’s own rules decide. For accessible seating and accommodations, use the venue’s accessibility services page before selecting seats.
Build a Midtown day around it
Keep your evening anchor fixed and let the afternoon stay flexible. The Empire State Building offers the skyline version of Midtown; the High Line offers a walking afternoon on the west side. Choose one, leave time for dinner, then head to the arena. A daytime tour pairs well with Bryant Park and the New York Public Library if you want a less expensive second stop.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Madison Square Garden tour included with a game ticket?
No. The guided tour is a separate purchase from a game or concert ticket.
How long does the tour take?
Approximately 60 minutes. Access to particular backstage areas depends on venue activity.
Can I bring kosher food into MSG?
Outside food and beverages are not normally permitted. Contact Guest Relations in advance about medical conditions or specific needs.
Does every child need a ticket?
For the guided tour, children under five do not need their own ticket. For games and shows, the rules differ. Most events allow children under two on an adult’s lap without a separate ticket, but some family events require a ticket over age one. Follow the rules for your specific event.
