Brooklyn · A smaller wildlife day
CenterNYC editorial guide · Hours, prices and entrance checked October 12, 2026
A red panda can do a great deal for a family’s mood. So can a zoo visit that leaves enough energy for the rest of Brooklyn. Prospect Park Zoo is a good candidate for that kind of day: an animal trail, a lively sea lion court and smaller creatures worth slowing down to notice.
The appeal is a manageable visit, not a contest to see the largest collection. The zoo estimates an average stay of one to one-and-a-half hours. We would allow two with younger children, including time to linger. Pair it with a park walk rather than filling every remaining hour with another attraction.

Look beyond the big personalities
A two-hour zoo visit: use the entrance from Prospect Park, then make time for Discovery Trail, Sea Lion Court and the smaller animal exhibits. This is our family planning allowance, including pauses; the park walk and lunch afterward need additional time. The Flatbush Avenue street entrance is closed according to the zoo’s ticket page.
Discovery Trail is the place to slow down. Its animal residents include red pandas, dingoes, porcupines and small deer. The official trail guide points out southern pudu, the world’s smallest deer. A useful game for children is to look for differences in the animals’ feet, coats and movement instead of simply counting how many they have seen.
Northside rewards a second look. Pallas’s cats share this area with aviaries of Asian birds. The male Himalayan monal’s iridescent feathers are the sort of detail that can disappear in a quick walk past. The zoo’s Northside page also describes silver pheasants and the vocal white-crested laughingthrush. Give the birds a little of the attention usually reserved for mammals.
Sea Lion Court brings the volume up. It sits at the heart of the zoo, and training sessions can be noisy. If noise is a concern, watch from a comfortable distance rather than joining the closest cluster of visitors. Choose a session from the day’s schedule; animal activities can change.
Then contrast the open courtyard with the smaller animals in the Hall of Animals, where the collection includes dwarf mongooses and dart frogs. Animal Lifestyles and the Barn and Garden add different kinds of encounters. The exhibit directory helps you select priorities without turning the visit into homework.

Arrive at least an hour before closing. The ticket page currently gives a one-hour last-entry cutoff, while the general visitor page says 30 minutes. Following the earlier cutoff avoids gambling your visit on that discrepancy; a morning or early-afternoon arrival gives you a much better outing.
Choose the entrance before choosing the train
The listed address is 450 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, but the ticket page directs visitors to the entrance from Prospect Park and says the Flatbush Avenue entrance is not open. For step-free access, the zoo identifies Children’s Corner, beside the Carousel and Lefferts Historic House. Do not assume that navigating to the street address will take you to the most convenient gate.
The official directions list the B, Q and Franklin Avenue Shuttle to Prospect Park station. Service depends on the day, so use a current journey planner. Open the zoo in Google Maps, then follow the entrance information on your ticket. There is no zoo parking lot.
Accessibility, quiet moments and practical stops
Zoo buildings are wheelchair accessible. Discovery Trail and the Barn have rough terrain; part of the Hall of Animals has low light. A limited supply of free wheelchairs is available. The official accessibility page explains the routes and accommodations.
For visitors with sensory sensitivities, the zoo has designated quiet areas and lends sensory bags at Children’s Corner, with identification left as a deposit. The sea lion pool is a designated headphone zone. Knowing that before arrival makes it easier to plan a comfortable pause instead of reacting when the day becomes overwhelming.
Restrooms and water-bottle filling stations are listed in the visitor FAQs. Scooters are not allowed, and tickets permit a single entry: plan your outside meal after the zoo rather than expecting to leave for lunch and return.
Let the park be the second half of the outing
Our suggested day is deliberately simple: zoo first, a food break, then a walk in Prospect Park that matches your family’s remaining energy. Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn Museum are possibilities for a separate or extended outing nearby, but adding another ticketed attraction is a choice, not an obligation.
For kosher food, plan a verified restaurant or packed meal separately. We do not identify the zoo café as kosher. Our Brooklyn kosher restaurant collection is currently available in Hebrew; allow travel time to the restaurant you choose. Shabbat-observant visitors should plan this ticketed visit on a weekday and keep Friday afternoon free for preparations.
Which New York zoo fits your trip?
Choose Prospect Park Zoo when Brooklyn is already on the itinerary and a shorter wildlife visit sounds right. Central Park Zoo is easier to combine with a Manhattan park day. Queens Zoo is another smaller option. Choose the Bronx Zoo when you want the zoo to be the day’s main destination and are ready for considerably more walking.
Our comparison of New York’s four zoos shows the family admission totals and travel trade-offs together, so you can choose an outing that fits the rest of your trip.
A few questions before you go
Is Prospect Park Zoo free?
Regular admission is paid; children two and under enter free. Some eligibility-based benefits are described in the official FAQs. The free park outside is a separate experience.
Is it a rainy-day attraction?
There are indoor animal buildings, but outdoor paths are part of the visit. It is not an entirely indoor alternative to a park day.
How long should we allow?
The zoo estimates one to one-and-a-half hours. Our planning suggestion is up to two hours with children, plus travel and a meal.
